Michelle started her accounting career in 1983 when she was employed in a medium sized Chartered Accountant office. Still employed in 1987 she qualified as a Society of Chartered Accountants New Zealand Member.
In 2004 Michelle joined the Accountants & Tax Agents Institute of New Zealand (ATAINZ) and began her dream of opening her own accounting business. She worked part time from home and quickly the firm grew, so in 2009, in the middle of the recession, she opened the Kelston branch.
“Everyday I value my work, as each day is varied. One moment I will be helping a client face a huge tax problem and in the same day, I can be discussing how best to structure a business to minimise legitimately their tax obligations. Or I may be helping a client learn how to pay their taxes online or manage their Xero files better. Then with another client the same day, I can be discussing company obligations and cover how a change in a particular part of tax law affects them specifically. I have a variety of clients from all walks of life but the majority of my clients have small businesses, many clients are self-employed, and I also have many clients with existing Trusts and rental properties; because from the start of my business, I have specialised in those areas. I do enjoy helping clients surmount tax debt problems and overcoming their initial difficulties. Sometimes taxation supervision is required by Official Assignee or the Inland Revenue. I also have many retired clients some of whom have investment portfolios or overseas pensions and still need each year to file tax returns.”
“I enjoy helping others where I can both with filing and paying their taxes and also business advice from what I have learnt from my own business success and watching the different clients and how they succeed or not depending upon what they do with their business. “Outside of work I enjoy reading, swimming and scrapbooking, this includes organising times to meet with others who enjoy crafting with paper. I am active in my church, I also regularly take time out to recharge my energy with holidays in my vintage caravan and often ride as pillion on my husband’s Triumph motorbike. I have four children. Only two of these have left home, my husband Grant also has 4 older children.”
